What does it mean to be effective?

Being an effective employee means taking actions that have positive outcomes. If you are an effective salesperson, then you will be sealing deals when you visit customers and bringing in orders at or above the expected level. If you are an effective teacher, your students will reach their potential and achieve or exceed the results they hope for in their exams. If on the other hand, you are ineffective, you will be visiting clients but failing to secure orders, or your pupils will be messing about on social media rather than paying attention to lessons.

However, what you haven’t considered is that while your sales are bringing in $50,000 per week, your colleague’s sales are bringing in $80,000. To be the most effective salesperson you need to be bringing in the most revenue, not just have the best percentages.
  • Specialist effectiveness is all about using your expert knowledge to get the maximum returns on the company’s investment by employing the most effective processes, staff, and If you run the production line of a manufacturing company, to be effective you’ll need to ensure all members of your staff are achieving the ideal balance between numbers of items produced and quality of products. If you speed up the process, you’ll have more products, but if the production line is going too fast, you will also get more products that aren’t of a high enough quality to sell. Finding that balance by ensuring your staff members are completing their tasks as quickly and at the same time as carefully as possible is part of what makes you effective as a supervisor. If you’re the engineer in charge of keeping the machinery operating, your effectiveness will be measured by how well the machinery works and the amount of downtime there is.
