The Importance of Effectiveness

Whenever you have a job to do or a task to complete, there will be a method that is most suited to the circumstances. Finding the most effective way of doing things is one of the attributes that a good employee must have, and it is one that is appreciated by managers because it can affect so many aspects of the business for the better. What does it mean to be effective?
Being an effective employee means taking actions that have positive outcomes. If you are an effective salesperson, then you will be sealing deals when you visit customers and bringing in orders at or above the expected level. If you are an effective teacher, your students will reach their potential and achieve or exceed the results they hope for in their exams. If on the other hand, you are ineffective, you will be visiting clients but failing to secure orders, or your pupils will be messing about on social media rather than paying attention to lessons.
How do you become effective?
Luckily, effectiveness is something that you can learn. It’s not one of those talents that only certain people are blessed with, but a skill that can be taught and developed. You just need to have the ability to listen and observe and learn from the examples of others. First of all, you need to understand what effectiveness is and how it differs from efficiency. These two terms are often used together, but they aren’t interchangeable. Being effective is about getting positive results from your actions, whereas being efficient is about getting those results in the most time and cost-effective way possible. It’s perfectly possible to be one without being the other, but ideally, you want to be both. By understanding the concepts of effectiveness and efficiency, you will be able to learn how to improve your own abilities and capitalize on the results of your efforts.
How do you demonstrate your effectiveness?
There are two main methods of demonstrating your effectiveness. First with processes, and second with specialist expertise:
- Being effective in processes is all about looking at the way tasks are completed and getting the maximum output for every input. In other words, for every action you take, what is the best possible outcome? If you are in sales, then getting one hundred percent of your customers to place orders should be a fairly obvious maximum output for the input. Now imagine that you are getting ten sales per week or two per day. Your colleague has a sixty percent order rate from their clients and also makes two sales per day. Looking at it from this perspective, you are doing far better than your colleague because you are both making the same number of sales, but you are forty percent more effective on paper. However, what you haven’t considered is that while your sales are bringing in $50,000 per week, your colleague’s sales are bringing in $80,000. To be the most effective salesperson you need to be bringing in the most revenue, not just have the best percentages.
- Specialist effectiveness is all about using your expert knowledge to get the maximum returns on the company’s investment by employing the most effective processes, staff, and If you run the production line of a manufacturing company, to be effective you’ll need to ensure all members of your staff are achieving the ideal balance between numbers of items produced and quality of products. If you speed up the process, you’ll have more products, but if the production line is going too fast, you will also get more products that aren’t of a high enough quality to sell. Finding that balance by ensuring your staff members are completing their tasks as quickly and at the same time as carefully as possible is part of what makes you effective as a supervisor. If you’re the engineer in charge of keeping the machinery operating, your effectiveness will be measured by how well the machinery works and the amount of downtime there is. Therefore, an essential responsibility is keeping the machines operating at peak efficiency and with as few stoppages as possible. How do you know if you’re effective enough?

Keeping an eye on how effective you are will enable you to deal with any blips in your performance and identify areas where you can make improvements.
Being effective is a piece but not a whole
Being effective is important, but it doesn’t end there. In addition to being effective, there are a whole host of other attributes you need to make sure you’re at the top of your game and are getting the most out of your role. Knowledge, communication, productivity, honesty, teamwork, a variety of skills pertinent to your industry and your position; it is the combination of these that contribute to your overall effectiveness in your job, so every element plays a vital role.
However effective you think you are, there will always be things you can do to improve your effectiveness. You should never stop striving to learn more and achieve more ambitious goals so that you get the most out of your job and lead a life that is rewarding professionally and financially.
