Business and Career

Working with children can be an especially rewarding kind of role. Children are so innocent and full of life, and working with them on a daily basis can be hugely satisfying for those who decide to get into the various roles where they are entrusted to care for, teach, and support kids of all ages.

If you enjoy the idea of working in a role where you are able to look after the youngest members of our society, help them through their tough days, celebrate with them when they achieve something, and laugh with them when they are happy, then you’ll be glad to hear that there are lots of worthwhile career options to consider. After all, it takes a village to raise a child, as the saying goes, and often that village can be made up of various professionals who will all be able to make an impact in the child’s life.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner:

If you want to look after children when they are sick and injured, be the gentle and kind soul that they look for when they are feeling scared or sad, and pour out your compassionate and caring nature into making kids in unfortunate situations feel better, then pediatric nursing might be the right role for you. Pediatric nurses aren’t just there to administer medication and treatment to children. They also play a key role in making sure that kids feel safe and cared for while they are in the hospital.

Being in a hospital is never a nice experience for anybody, but it can be especially scary for kids. Often, children who’ve had to spend time in hospital for an illness or an injury will always remember the kind-hearted nurses who cheered them up and soothed them when they were scared. To get into pediatric nursing, you will need to complete a BSN before training in pediatrics. Online pediatric nurse practitioner programs are available from Baylor University for nurses who want to start their own practice.

Teaching:

Studies have found that, aside from parents, teachers are the main adults that play a huge role in shaping who a child grows up to become. And it makes sense – teachers are people that most kids see five days per week and learn a lot from as they grow from being a child to a young adult.

Working as a teacher not only gives you the opportunity to spend your time mentoring children and helping them achieve their goals in life, but you will also get to invest your time into learning more and talking all about the subject that you are most passionate about, from math and science to sports. Teachers are always needed in a wide range of subjects, and the work that you will do will have a lasting impact that goes way beyond the subject matter. As a teacher, you can start your own business offering private lessons.

School Counselor:

School counselors are trusted professionals tasked with providing a listening ear for children in high school. They may assist with college applications, provide career advice, or simply listen to kids when they have a problem that they want to get off their chest. School counselors might hear about problems at home, bullying issues in the school, and other problems that they will need to put together a plan of action for in order to help the child get through the situation and come out of the other end stronger for it.

Childcare Professional:

With more families now having two parents at work, childcare has become essential for most. This means that there is always a demand for good childcare professionals that parents can trust to leave their children with, often from a very young age.

In this role, you will typically be working with younger babies and toddlers who are not yet old enough to start going to school. The role is a huge responsibility as you will be tasked with tracking and supervising several children at the same time. But, knowing that you are acting as the main caregiver for these children when their parents are working, and being able to have such an impact on their little lives can be hugely rewarding.

Social Worker:

Social workers are often tasked with working with children who are in difficult situations. The role of a social worker involves being there for and providing support to the most vulnerable people in our society, many of which will be kids.

In this role, you will need to be prepared to face some sad situations as you may find yourself dealing with children who have experienced abuse, been neglected, or have been the victim of a crime. While the job can often be heartbreaking when you hear about what these children have been through, knowing that you’ve been able to help them when they needed it the most can make it all worth it.

Children’s Therapist:

Mental health isn’t just for adults. More and more children are suffering from the symptoms of mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, from an alarmingly younger age. This has led to a greater need for therapists and counselors who are specially trained to treat children. In this role, you may be working with children who have experienced a traumatic event such as the loss of a loved one, been the victim of a crime, or have suffered neglect and abuse.

Counselors and therapists who specialize in treating children will often use techniques such as play therapy or art therapy to help children feel comfortable and open up to them more. While this can also be a heartbreaking role, since you’ll often be working directly with children who’ve been through a lot in their young life, being the person who is there to listen to them and offer them some security, safety, and support is one of the most rewarding aspects of this career.

Children always need good people around them. If you want to work in a role where you can contribute to the next generation of humans in a positive way, these are just some of the best options to consider.
