In order to achieve anything meaningful in life, you’ll need some help along the way. Even the most talented people require teachers, bosses, and mentors to guide them through challenging times. However, while it’s obvious that finding a mentor is often a good decision, fewer people are interested in becoming mentors themselves. Yet, there are many good reasons to invest time and energy helping those around you –– both in business and in life. Business leaders should take an active role in employee training first and foremost because it’s good business policy. After all, employees who receive quality training and education will be well-prepared to take on challenges at their job. What’s more, staff members who have a deep understanding of their company/industry will be well positioned to step into leadership roles. Lastly, by investing in your employees, you’re likely to increase the retention rates at your organization. So if you have long-term aspirations of growing your business, mentoring new employees now is a must.
In business, as in life, you never know what the future holds. The intern working in your HR department today could be the CEO of a billion-dollar company in ten years. As such, it’s always a good idea to establish and maintain good relationships with as many employees as possible. Even if they leave your company one day, you may still have the chance to collaborate with them down the road.

If you want to be a good teacher, you have to educate yourself before you can educate your students. In the same way, business leaders at startups who act as mentors have to stay on top of new developments and learn new skills in order to provide relevant training to their employees. Simply by working with new employees, you’ll learn new skills while sharpening your understanding of important business concepts.
