Things to Do When You’re Not Yet Ready to Move at the End of Your Office Lease

Once your office lease is over, you have no choice but to move out if you don’t intend to renew the contract. The landlord might have a new tenant who will use the space on the next day after the last day of your lease.

If you are prepared to move and have found the perfect new location, it won’t be a problem. You will be ready to leave on the last day, or even earlier. It’s a problem when you decide to move at the last minute, and you have no more time to pack and take your things out.

Once you realize that it’s impossible for you to finish everything before the last day of your lease, these are some tips to help you.

Ask for an extension:

You need to inform the landlord that you can’t finish moving on time. Therefore, you’re requesting an extension so that you can complete the process. If you have maintained a good relationship with the landlord over the years, it’s possible you get what you request without giving something in return. In most cases, though, you will have to pay a portion of your monthly rent. It depends on how many days you need to extend.

Hire a moving company:

If you want to rush the process, you can partner with a moving company. You will get help in packing your things quickly and moving them all safely to the new office. You can request additional staff so that you can finish the process on time. Even if you have to pay more for this service, it’s okay. You will still save more money than paying an amount close to the equivalent of your monthly rental bill.

Ask your employees to work overtime:

Since the decision to move affects everyone, you can request the employees to come back for an extra day and finish packing. You can pay them an amount equivalent to how much they get for overtime or allow them to take paid leave some other time. When everyone works to finish moving, you can do it on time.

Rethink your plans:

At some point, you might need to rethink your decision to move. If it’s causing too much trouble and you don’t think you can make it on time, you might decide to stay. Ask your landlord if someone else is going to rent the place soon. If no one will be renting it, you can negotiate new terms to extend the lease for a year or so.
