Maersk To Add Spacex Starlink Satellite System To At Least 330 Container Ships

Danish transportation leader Maersk has revealed plans to equip approximately 330 of its container ships with the SpaceX Starlink satellite system. This technology upgrade will provide the ships with high-speed Internet, reaching speeds of up to 200 megabits per second.
“The high-speed connectivity will enable our seagoing colleagues to stay connected with their loved ones while at sea,” said Leonardo Sonzio, Maersk’s head of fleet management and technology. “It will also propel the expansion of seamless cloud solutions, enabling our vision to digitalise our vessel operations.”
SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, believes this partnership will help Maersk maintain its competitive edge in the global transportation industry.
“Starlink’s high-speed broadband through the world’s most advanced satellite Internet constellation will help boost efficiency through seamless connectivity, no matter where in the world they are,” said Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceX vice president of Starlink commercial sales.
The installation of Starlink on Maersk’s vessels is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of the following year. Starlink, operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has launched over 5,000 satellites and serves more than two million subscribers. However, concerns have been raised about the increasing number of Starlink satellites contributing to space debris in low Earth orbit, which poses potential hazards to other spacecraft.
In contrast to traditional satellite systems that require extended testing and production timelines, Starlink’s ability to deploy satellites rapidly has disrupted the satellite communications sector.
